Peter Lanza the father of Newtown, Connecticut, shooter Adam has spoken out for the first time about his son, who killed 20 children and 6 adults before killing himself in December 2012. (He killed his mother, Nancy, before the massacre.) Peter a finance executive who divorced Nancy in 2009 told The New Yorker s Andrew Solomon, in interviews for a piece published today , in reference to Adam, You can t get any more evil.
How much do I beat up on myself about the fact that he s my son? A lot, Peter said. With hindsight, I know Adam would have killed me in a heartbeat, if he d had the chance. He said he believes Adam shot Nancy four times because one [was] for each of us: one for Nancy; one for him; one for (his brother) ben 10 Ryan; one for me.
Peter said that, by the time Adam entered middle school, it was evident that something was wrong. While noting that Adam had been diagnosed with Asperger s, Peter assessed, Asperger s makes people unusual, but it doesn t make people like this. He said his ex-wife had never suspected the capacity for violence in their son. She never confided ben 10 to her sister or best friend about being worried. She slept with her bedroom door unlocked and kept guns in the house, which she would not have done if she were frightened.
While Peter had avoided speaking to the press, he said he wanted to do so now because he wants people to be afraid of the fact that this could happen to them. Peter said he has offered to meet with the families of victims of the shooting, and two families had taken him up on it so far.
